Education is one of the most crucial aspects of our lives, shaping who we become and how we navigate the world. It provides us with the necessary tools to think rationally and find logical solutions to problem. Many people say that experience is the best teacher which provides real life lessons, however if I look back to my younger days, there are many life skills and pieces of knowledge I wish my school had included in their curriculum which would have prepared me in a better way to handle real life problems. In this 2-part article, Here are 16 things I believe would have made a significant difference in our lives.
- Investing & Money Management
Learning about investing from a young age would have been invaluable in understanding the stock market basics, the power of compound interest, and how to diversify a portfolio could have set me up for financial success much earlier. I believe that schools should not just teach textbook knowledge to their students but emphasize the importance of investing and providing practical knowledge on how to get started. This real-life skill should not just be focussed on commerce stream students but should be taught to all students from different streams.
On the other hand, Money is the necessity of life for fulfilling one’s basic needs and maintaining a comfortable lifestyle. As kids, most of us hardly ever imagined how hard our parents had worked so that apart from fulfilling our requirements, we could still have our pocket money. Today when most of us are having kids and have a family to look after, we realize how challenging it is to not just maintain a certain lifestyle but also prepare for future and unforeseen emergencies. Basic money management skills are essential for adult life. This includes budgeting, saving, understanding credit scores, and managing debt. These skills can help individuals make informed financial decisions and avoid common pitfalls that lead to financial stress.
- Basic Accounting
Understanding the basics of accounting can be incredibly useful, whether one is managing personal finances or running a business. Schools should teach students of all streams on how to read financial statements, understand cash flow, and manage budgets.
This knowledge will help the students to understand financial matters more confidently weather they are doing a job or starting/ managing the own/ family business and can lead to more informed financial decisions.
- Long-Term Planning
Many of us struggle with planning for the future. Schools can teach students how to set long-term goals, develop actionable plans, and stay motivated over time.
This includes lessons on time management, prioritization, and adapting to changing circumstances.
- Healthy Cooking
Nutrition plays a significant role in our overall health. Teaching students how to cook healthy meals can lead to better eating habits and a more balanced lifestyle.
Schools should offer practical cooking classes that focus on nutrition, meal planning, and basic culinary skills.
- Self defence
Self-defense offers numerous benefits, including physical fitness, self-discipline, and self-defense skills. Schools should consider incorporating martial arts into their physical education programs. These practices can help students build confidence, improve focus, and learn the importance of respect and perseverance.
- Second Language
Being bilingual or multilingual opens numerous opportunities for students domestically and internationally. Schools should place a greater emphasis on learning a second language from an early age.
This skill can enhance cognitive abilities, improve cultural understanding, and provide a competitive edge in the global job market.
- Volunteering
Volunteering teaches empathy, compassion, and social responsibility. Schools should encourage students to participate in community service projects, helping them understand the importance of giving back.
Volunteering can also provide valuable life experiences and help students develop a sense of purpose.
Conclusion
In this part, I tried to cover some of the basic skills schools should teach for the overall development of children. In my next post, I’ll cover some more skills which I wish my school would have taught me. Stay tuned.
