Movies are the mirror of society. They often reflect what is there in society or sometimes what needs to be changed in society. Movies are a very powerful medium that can trigger a wide range of emotions in us-From sorrow to happiness, laughter to sadness, anger, love, Hope, and many more.
No doubt, Movies are for entertainment but sometimes, they leave a lasting impression on us and can teach important life lessons. Here are 05 movies that have taught me some important life lessons:
1. Top Gun (1986)
Top Gun is the story of a naval aviator Capt. Pete “Maverick” Michell, who lost his navigator and best friend LTJG (Junior Grade) Nick “Goose” Bradshaw, during a training exercise at The Naval Fighter Weapons School (Top Gun), when they had to eject from their plane. Shaken by this sudden loss he wanted to quit the exercise and the navy. When he meets his Top Gun instructor, Cdr. Mike “Viper” Metcalf , who is also his father’s old friend, to know the options he has, Viper points out that since Maverick feels responsible for Goose’s death, he has lost self-confidence. During this conversation he says:
Post this meeting, Maverick reconsiders quitting and continues to fly for the Navy and proves to be one of the finest pilots.
This is one of the most important lessons of my life. We sometimes feel sad, angry, disappointed, or ashamed due to a certain outcome. Instead of quitting or regretting, we should evaluate the reasons why things turned out the way they did. What more or different could have been done for a better outcome and apply those assessments in our future endeavors for a much better result. Having negative thoughts about a failure won’t change the result, rather, it will slowly destroy us from the inside. We should always have the courage to take charge, learn from our mistakes, and work for a better outcome.
2. Top Gun- Maverick (2022)
Top Gun- Maverick is a sequel to its 1986 blockbuster Top Gun. Capt. Pete “Maverick” Michell, after 30 years of service, is a highly decorated test pilot of the US Navy, who despite having legendary exploits, never climbed the ladder of promotions. even with exceptional records, he was never considered for promotions because he always did what he felt was right, despite his senior’s disapproval.
In the movie, he was recalled reluctantly to The Naval Fighter Weapons School (Top Gun) to train a group of fresh Top Gun graduates for a very classified mission which was successfully completed under his guidance.
This movie taught me that having a highly decorated or fancy designation doesn’t matter. What matters is to be the best in whatever we do.
Even if Maverick held the rank of captain all along his professional course, he had real-life experience in every mission aspect. He was an experienced naval aviator, who had flown planes across the globe. He believed and proved to be the best in what he did. Just like him, one should be inspired to be the best version of themselves every day. Life should not be wasted competing with others, but with us. If you love what you do, and do what you love, your designation or professional position should not matter.
3. 3 Idiots (2009)
3 Idiots is the story of 3 students of an engineering college, coming from different family backgrounds who eventually became inseparable friends. Though one of the students known as Rancho was brilliant in studies and eager to learn, his other 2 friends find it really hard to keep up. While explaining to them the correct approach to achieve their goals, he said:
“Kamyab hone ke liye nahi, kaabil hone ke liye padho, kamyabi jhak marke peeche aayegi.”
Study hard not for success but to be capable. Success will follow.
An important lesson I learned from this dialogue is to keep working hard not for achieving short-term success, but to keep yourself relevant in the market; keeping yourself updated with relevant skills, knowledge, and experience, which will eventually lead us to success and satisfaction in our careers.
4. Chichore (2019)
Chichore is a coming-of-age comedy-drama that tells the story of a group of friends from college and their journey through life.
A group of boys from a hostel are committed to winning the college championship to remove the tag LOSERS from their hostel’s name. Although everyone in this group has their own strengths and weakness, and are having personal struggles, but during the championship, they develop a strong bond of friendship, supporting each other through every situation and creating memories for a lifetime. Even after being constantly demoralized by other students, they remain determined and motivated toward their goals. though they couldn’t win the championship, they gain the respect of other students for their determination to not give up.
20 years later, when Anirudh’s (one of the LOSERS) son attempts suicide as he could not qualify for the engineering entrance exam. He calls himself a loser as he could not keep up with their parent’s expectations. To motivate him, the group reunites and tells him that no one is a loser if they have given their best shot.
They explain to him that everyone makes mistakes, but they should not be judged by their past mistakes. Everyone deserves a second chance, and they should use that to make things right.
In life, we are usually disheartened when the outcome of an event is not what we desired or expected. The pressure of the expectations is such that sometimes disappointment takes over the ability of rational thinking, which can push an individual into depression. At that time, with determination, perseverance, and the support of loved ones, anyone can overcome any obstacle they face.
5. Sultan (2016)
Sultan shows the story of an Olympic wrestler Sultan Ali Khan, who is one of the most successful wrestlers of the nation.
But in his arrogance of being the best, he alienates the people who helped him in his journey , even his wife.
Sultan’s life takes a turn when they lose their just-born son to a blood disorder. In an attempt for redemption, Sultan collects donations while working in a government job to start a blood bank in his village.
Due to a strange stroke of luck, he got pulled in to fight in a cross martial art event but as he was out of shape, his sponsor Akash arranges for training with an offbeat trainer Fateh Singh. After intense training and willpower to make things right, Sultan wins the tournament and his wife’s love. With the money he won, Sultan finally opened a blood bank in his village. This movie taught me 02 important lessons.
a.) Hero is not the one who wins. Hero is the one who loses because he is the one who knows the true value of winning.
We all fight for many things in our lives. Many times, during these struggles we face failures again and again, resulting in demotivation and a feeling to give up. That is the moment when it is important to push further and harder. Learn from your mistakes, keep improving, and maintain focus. A person who despite failures keeps pushing himself knows the real value of success because he knows the amount of hard work, sweat, and blood associated with that success.
b.) No one can beat you until you are beaten by yourself.
While we keep facing challenges and failures in our endeavors, sometimes we may get either beaten by the situation or the competitors, but we must never give up on our efforts otherwise that would be the real failure. Remember, Good outcome become memories, bad outcome become experiences and the worse outcome becomes lessons. A person as an individual stops growing when he/she stops learning. Learn from your experiences and lessons, find out what went wrong, and how this outcome could have been better.
